Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to protect my business from fire?
-Iowa Fire Control recommends that you start by understanding the potential hazards.  This is done by having a fire protection audit performed by one of our trained staff.  We will provide you with the information needed to make the most intelligent purchasing decision possible.

Can you install an upgrade for my existing fire suppression system?
-We offer many different options to accommodate existing systems.  In 1994, Underwriters Laboratories introduced a new standard for protecting commercial kitchens referred to as UL300.  Systems that are not presently UL300 are required to be updated when a change in the cooking operations takes place.  This can be something as simple as changing the type of oil used for frying.  Contact us to discuss your unique situation.

Why do my fire extinguishers need to be serviced each year even though the gauge says it's charged?
-Whether your fire extinguisher is still pressurized is only one component of its functionality.  You must be certain the hose is not obstructed so fire suppressant chemical can pass freely from the cylinder.  The dry chemical found in ABC fire extinguishers can begin to clump at the bottom of the cylinder limiting an extinguishers fire fighting capability.  An experienced provider can ensure these things do not happen.

Are there different types of fire extinguishers for different purposes?
-Absolutely.  The letters that denote the type of fire extinguisher represent the type of fires they are designed to extinguish.  ABC represents the three classes of fire that particular extinguishers will put out.  For example, the A represents Class A fires which consist of fires in ordinary combustible materials like wood, cloth and paper.  B is used for flammable liquids and C for energized electrical equipment.  An ABC fire extinguisher is not acceptable for a commercial kitchen using vegetable or animal oils and fats for cooking.  That requires a Class K fire extinguisher.

I need an Ansul system for my restaurant, can you provide that?
-Ansul is not a type of fire suppression system for commercial kitchens, it is a brand.  Much like people associate tissues with Kleenex, the name Ansul is associated with this type of suppression system.  Iowa Fire Control offers two different manufacturers commercial kitchen fire suppression systems, Amerex's KP and Zone Defense systems and Buckeye's Kitchen Mister.  Both of these systems offer great coverage at a competitive price.  Many of the features of these two systems are far superior to those found in the Ansul R-102 system.
